Rory Sabbatini triumphed in the pre-tournament par-three competition at the Masters on Wednesday.

The South African took victory with a five-under-par score of 22 over nine holes, although it is a dubious honour as the par-three winner has never gone on to wear the Green Jacket four days later.

Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and American Woody Austin finished one behind in a tie for second.

Further excitement was provided by Paul Azinger, Charles Coody, Fred Couples and Wayne Grady, who each produced a hole-in-one.

And 78-year-old Arnold Palmer - a four-time Masters champion - won one of the 'nearest the pin' prizes after a shot to within two feet of the opening flag.

The competition takes place on a nine-hole course close to the 10th hole of the main lay-out at the Augusta National.

Tournament favourite Tiger Woods was among the players who did not take part in the optional event.

"It's changed over the years," he said. "It used to be I thought it was a lot of fun, but now it is a little bit distracting to be ready for the tournament."
